Furniture Designs Trending in 2023

Over the past two years, the furniture industry has faced many challenges. With the influence of rising material and labor costs, shortages, and an effort to lower lead times, manufacturers have begun to rethink their product lines. Catalogs are beginning to shorten and color options become less extensive to create quality furniture that is more consistent and efficient.

Through media and examining sales, furniture manufacturers continue catering their designs to be among the general interests of their buyers’ communities. Which ones will we see popping up in the next year?

Top 3 Styles of 2023

Despite varying design preferences from the East to the West Coast of the United States, there are a few styles the nation is gravitating towards.

Transitional Furniture:

This style takes Traditional looks and blends them with Modern designs. The result creates a more clean, and classic look. The simple silhouettes are an even mix of curved and straight lines making it versatile for many homes. As such, Transitional furniture has resurfaced and was frequently popular in previous decades.

Modern Farmhouse:

Blending country and modern styles, this trend creates a more relaxed, contemporary look. It often features strong contrasts of black and white, and the most notable designer to utilize this style is Joanna Gaines (Magnolia Home). This is a style we’ve seen grow in popularity for some years now.

Pacific Coastal:

Furniture in this style often takes on more relaxed and lighter versions of designs that were popular in the 70s and 80s. It is a blend of Coastal, Art Deco, and Modern styles and often features brass accents, White Oak in natural finishes, and pastel paints.

It seems that clean lines and the influence of modern design are sweeping the furniture industry which is why these three styles are likely to be big hits in the new year.

Color Trends of 2023

Manufacturers are likely to consider keeping their color options as concise as possible to avoid an overwhelming catalog. When we look over the styles that are rising in popularity, it’s pretty clear to see that homes are welcoming warmer, light, and natural colors. No longer will grays be the most adored neutral in design. We’ll likely witness stains such as Cappuccino, Cocoa, and Driftwood rise to the top as trends transition towards more browns and beiges in homes.  Many of these colors and styles pair nicely with other neutral accents, pastels, blues, and greens. Decor in these sorts of colors may become more abundant throughout the year.

Trending Materials and Hardware of 2023

Without a doubt, hardwood will always remain the benchmark of quality furniture. However, with the recent supply chain issues the industry has faced, we will likely continue to see the popularity of furniture that is constructed of mixed materials, such as metal and wood.

With metal now playing a more recognized role, hardware made of gold and brass is gaining popularity. There has been quite an interest in smooth handles and pulls, but a process known as knurling has started to sweep the nation. The spiraling, deep lines this process creates on metal add beautiful texture to furniture.

What affects the latest trends?

Throughout the centuries, new styles have been inspired by something of the past. Even the latest and experimental trends we’ve seen in the furniture industry have been somehow influenced by familiar and functional designs. Whether trends are new ideas or traditional designs making a comeback, the media is going to fuel the results of 2023. Today in the 21st century, social media has created a hub full of shared ideas, styles, and projects. The average person spends nearly 2 1/2 hours on some form of social media on their device. Instagram currently holds a very large influence on those in interior design. For companies to continue keeping up with consumer preferences, involvement and understanding of the media will be extremely beneficial.

Though the predictions above for the trends of 2023 come from the observations of those heavily involved with furniture design, we may find a few surprises in the new year. We’re excited to see what 2023 has in store for the world of furniture.
