Episode Recap

What does it take to build a successful business from the ground up?

In our latest podcast episode, David Bennett, owner of Bennett’s Express, shares how an unexpected opportunity, unwavering faith, and a commitment to serving others helped grow his company into an operation with 8–10 trucks on the road each week.

Here are a few highlights from our conversation.

The Beginning of Bennett’s Express

David never planned to own a trucking company. With no background in furniture delivery, he was introduced to the industry through family before being offered the chance to take over a delivery operation.

The offer sounded almost too good to be true: a truck, trailer, no money down, and no payments for the first three months.

That leap of faith became the beginning of Bennett’s Express in 2013.

Growing One Step at a Time

Rather than chasing rapid growth, David focused on serving customers well and adding drivers as demand increased. Today, Bennett’s Express operates 8–10 trucks each week, serving customers throughout Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and beyond.

A few milestones marked that steady growth. Bennett’s Express officially launched in 2013, with David starting out in a single 44-foot enclosed trailer. Over the years, the company gradually added more trucks on the road each week as demand grew—a reflection of David’s commitment to growing intentionally rather than chasing rapid success.

As host Josh Troyer put it during the conversation, “Slow growth is good growth. Grow overnight, fall overnight.”

More Than Moving Furniture

One of the most interesting parts of the discussion was how Bennett’s Express helps furniture retailers simplify the delivery process.

While furniture is at the heart of the business, Bennett’s Express also transports everything from pallets of minerals and battery-powered bicycles to horse-drawn equipment, Amish machinery, and general freight for businesses and homeowners.

By managing more of the delivery process, Bennett’s Express reduces furniture handling, helping lower the risk of damage while creating a smoother experience for retailers and homeowners alike.

David summed up his approach with one statement:

“I want to handle your furniture the way I would want you to handle my furniture.”

Built on Relationships

One of the things that sets Bennett’s Express apart is its commitment to earning customer trust. Rather than relying on long-term contracts, David believes lasting relationships are built through:

  • Dependable service
  • Clear communication
  • Fast response times
  • Consistent follow-through

Even today, he still answers many customer calls himself and works to provide quick quotes, knowing that responsiveness can make all the difference.

Faith Through Every Season

Throughout the episode, David reflects on the values that have guided both his business and his life: faith, service, perseverance, and steady growth.

David shared that during difficult seasons, he often reminds himself, “This is just a season that I’m going through right now. But if I stay faithful, I’ll get through that valley and get on the mountain.” It’s a reminder that success isn’t built overnight—it’s built through consistency, character, and staying faithful through every season.
